Families are listed by the area that they are mainly associated with. If you think you may have a connection with any of these families and there is no link, contact me with the details and I shall forward your e-mail.

Buckinghamshire

Fenny Stratford

Elaine WOOD has a CHARLESWORTH family living in Fenny Stratford, c. 1858-1877. She then traced them back to "Roudge" (Rudge?) in Wiltshire in 1837. She thinks they were stone masons / brick layers and railway workers.

Derbyshire

Bolsover

I have information on several CHARLESWORTH lines from the Bolsover area of Derbyshire in my files and a few from Chesterfield, some of them occasionally roaming into the Mansfield area of Nottinghamshire. These lines are probably connected, but I have yet to find the common ancestors. The earliest date I have is in 1675.

Leicestershire

Shepshed

Jane JAMES is researching a CHARLESWORTH family that have been based in Shepshed, Leicestershire. In an email dated 18th February 28, Jane describes them as follows:

My CHARLESWORTHs at Shepshed begin with two illegitimate births of John and James CHARLESWORTH; sons of Sarah PRICE. I think their father was William CHARLESWORTH but not sure where he hailed from - I have suspected Ashby de la Zouch where there are CHARLESWORTHs in the 18th Century. ...

I know some CHARLESWORTHs were still at Shepshed in 1950s. Lewis CHARLESWORTH my great granduncle died there in 1951. In the early years they were mainly framework knitters but later some became miners.

The family also has connections with both Derby and the Shirland area (Derbyshire).

Yorkshire

Fulstone, Huddersfield

Roger and Wendy (nee CHARLESWORTH) GILL have their CHARLESWORTH interests on their own web-site [External Link].

Their earliest known ancestor is Jonathan CHARLESWORTH, born circa 1791, in the township of Fulstone. Jonathan and Elizabeth, his wife, had at least nine children, some of which stayed in the Fulstone, Jackson Bridge, Hepworth and Scholes areas whilst others moved a little further away to Cumberworth and Thurlstone. Later generations have continued in this pattern.

There are many other (as yet unconnected) CHARLESWORTH families in the area. The earliest records of the ancient Parish Church at Kirkburton include many CHARLESWORTHs, the first, in April 1541 when "Hericus Charlsworth filius Jacobi Charlsworth baptus fuit vo die eisd mesis" was recorded. Unfortunately records from about 1650 to 1800 still remain to be identified in an attempt to link to these earlier records.
